BARBADOS JUDO TEAM PLACES THIRD IN
INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS
The Barbados Judo Association recently participated in three (3) junior
overseas tournaments. The first, the 2008 Junior US Open Championships
was held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from 17th to 28 July 2008. Eight
(8) competitors ranging in age from eight (8) to sixteen (16) fought in
the Tournament of some seven hundred (700) boys and girls from twenty
(20) countries. Although the lone bronze medal was won by Khalil Jessamy;
Tevon Layne, Ntui Okey, Asa Weithers and Alwyn Clarke (based in England)
all competed in the bronze finals and narrowly missed medals. The three
first times Onoh-Obasi Okey, Emerald Phillips – Moore and Tynisha
Watkins performed well. After the competition the judokas attended a
three day international training camp.
It was a different story in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic when a
Team that comprised athletes: Onoh-Obasi Okey, Danielle Blackman, Ntui
Okey, Asa Weithers and Jonathan Blackman; Coach Ian Weithers; Chaperone
/ Therapist Mandisa Reid and Manager Hoskins Caddle did duty at the
FedoJudo Infantile and Juvenile International Cup and the CAC
Championships from 1st to 4th August. Ntui Okey won two gold medals,
Danielle Blackman and Asa Weithers both won a silver and a bronze medal,
while Onoh-Obasi Okey was awarded two bronze medals. Unfortunately,
Jonathan Blackman sustained an injury in his first match that precluded
him from further competition. The Barbados Team placed third in the
Infantile Male and the Infantile Female divisions in both tournaments.

FEBRUARY 2008
The first tournament on the Barbados Judo Association calendar, the Ken
Freeman Memorial Tournament sponsored by the Marine Gardens Judo Club
was a good start to the 2008 competitive events. While only two of
the association's six clubs participated in the event, there was
extremely keen competition and quality quality judo for all to see.
Host Marine Gardens Judo Club had a clean sweep of the ten categories.
Pinelands Judo Club, while fielding a much smaller team than customary,
showed good resilience and strong fighting spirit.
