CLUB PROFILE
BARBADOS JUDO INSTITUTE
The Barbados Judo Institute was established in 1964 when a Canadian
Nidan, Mr. Paul Johnstone, more familiarly known as "Chickie", was
invited by the late Dr. Teddy Cummins to come to Barbados and set up a
Judo club.
The club was originally opened at Speedbird House and then moved to Bay
Street adjacent to the old Fish Market where it remained until its move
to the National Stadium in 1973.
During the first 15years or so of local judo, the BJI club served more
or less as the national centre for Judo, there being only one other club
i.e. Shindokan Judo Club. Much of the major national training activity
occurred here, and the cream of the island's Judo players had their
origins at BJI.
The club has continued in recent years to play a significant role in
local Judo though perhaps not as dominant as in the former years.
Currently the club remains a non-profit membership organisation run by a
small committee under the presidency of Lionel Maxwell. The main focus
of the club is the development of Junior Judo.
KEIKATH
SCHOOL OF MARTIAL ARTS
Keikath School of Martial Arts was formalized out of a group of adult
students who studied Sanuces Jiu Jitsu under the instruction of Sensei
Hoskins Caddle in 1994.
At that time the school offered membership to juniors and added Kodokan
Judo and Bajan Stick Science to its list of disciplines.
The dojo which operates at the National Stadium specializes in the
training of security personnel. The club has a membership of twenty-five
(25). Training times are Children (4 -16 years) Tuesdays 5.00pm and
Saturdays 9.30am. Adults (over 16 years) Tuesdays and Thursdays 7.00pm.

MARINE
GARDENS JUDO CLUB
Professor Ken Freeman, a 7th Dan from the USA who had been visiting the
island for approximately ten years conducting clinics on behalf of the
Barbados Judo Association founded the Marine Gardens Judo Club.
In 1984 Mr. Freeman and his wife Ruth decided that the climate was just
what they needed particulaly during the winter months and thus their
more permanent relationship with Barbados commenced. The club actually
has its official date of formation as October 13 1984 and at that time
had some twenty-five students on its roll.
About five years later David Neilands, Keith and Ian Weithers joined
the club and were immediately welcomed by a now aging Mr. Freeman who,
with these three and Arden Reid, formed a new management team.
On the passing of of Mr. Freeman in 1995, Ian Weithers assumed the
mantle of chief instructor and together with the team continued to
develop the club's activities. The club now boasts a membership of
thirty- five which is made up largely of children between the ages of 5
and fifteen and has three active black belt instructors.
The club's annual invitational tournament, Ken Freeman Invitational, is
usually the first tournament on the BJA Annual Calendar and generally
sees some 70 competitors.
Club training days include Tuesdays and Thursdays 7.00pm and Saturdays
10.30am.
